"Kai, where are ya bud?!" Alaric called out, wondering where the little toddler had disppeared off to. Silence was the response he got. Alaric frowned. Where had he gone off to? When Alaric was about to leave the room to look, sure enough, a small boy came waddling into one of the backrooms of Zonko's that Alaric was hanging out in. Alaric was the owner of the Joke Shop. It was a fitting job for him. Alaric was always the troublemaker, especially during his Hogwarts years. He got himself into a lot of trouble, getting detention practically every week for some prank he'd pulled on a new defenseless student. He never really targeted anyone in particlar, he just decided on a prank, set it up and then whoever happened to the one to fall into it was the victim. He'd definitely made a fair few enemies over the years that way. A lot of students understood what he was like that way and found him funny. So when Alaric had finished his Hogwarts years, he was working at Zonko's inbetween further studying and becoming a dragonologist. Teachers had admired him that way. Even though he was the real troublemaker, he wasn't behind in his studies, in which Care of Magical Creatures class had been his greatest subject. Next thing he knew, he was able to take over as the owner of Zonko's Joke Shop, after being their best employee at the time and the owner wanting to have a few relaxing peaceful last years of his life.
Alaric was a real kid at heart because of his rebellious, troublemaking, fun personality. It was definitely a beneficial trait when it came to raising his nephew, Malekai. Malekai was the son of Ricky's younger sister on his mothers side. His sister had been killed a few months ago and ever since then, Ricky had taken Malekai into his care. Of course, Malekai spent a lot of time with his grandmother, whenever Alaric had other responsibilities like his dragonologist jobs. Also, with Malekai not being his son, Ric's mother tries to look after him as much as possible because she believes her son isn't the father figure, which Alaric's not. But he has a weakness for his nephew, so tries to have him around as much as possible.
Whenever Alaric is working in the Joke Shop, he tends to have his nephew with him, letting him entertain himself by watching all the products go off whenever customers come in and try them out. Picking his nephew up, Alaric carried him upstairs to the front of the store, switching the sign to open before putting Malekai back down to wander around and play. Alaric moved around the shop, making sure things weren't out of place and everything was filled up. Walking to the counter, Alaric held a piece of raw meat to a small dragon sitting on the ledge behind the counter. The dragon took the meat as Ric stroked its tiny head. Alaric had always been fascinated by dragons and he wasn't going to give up the opportunity to look after a newly hatch dragon before sending it off with other dragons. Once the dragon was satisfied, Alaric continued his circle around the shop. Zonko's was always a popular shop within Hogsmeade, especially for all of the trouble making Hogwarts students that came in. WORDS; 561 . TAG; OPEN NOTES; blaahh :3

Taryn fully expected to go to work today until she received an owl from her mother reminding her that it was her little brother’s birthday. Birthdays were something that Taryn usually never forgot but after having to oblivarate about half a dozen muggles the night before it skipped her mind. She had planned yesterday to go shopping for her brother but when work got in the way and she didn’t get home until late it was too late to do anything. Thankfully her mother’s owl had arrived right before she left for work or she knew that she would have later received a howler (even at the age of twenty two). It was easy enough for Taryn to get off work especially after working after hours the night before and she even told her supervisor that if she was needed tonight that they were free to contact her. It wasn’t like Taryn had anything special planned besides sitting at home hoping to get called into work. Honestly work had been the most exciting part of her life lately and she realized she should get out more. So today while getting her brother’s present she would try and meet up with some of her friends.
Her outgoing first brought her to diagon alley where she went to buy a few books for her brother. They weren’t school books even though she was sure he would enjoy those too since he was a Ravenclaw just like she had been. They were stories about adventures and things every teenage boy would love. She knew she would have to get him more than a book or two since it was his birthday and she wasn’t there to celebrate it with him. As she window shopped in Diagon Alley she began to think of what her brother would really want. Her parents would be getting him something practical probably clothes, her twin would hopefully remember their younger’s brother birthday and at least send a card and then their sister who was still in Hogwarts would just shower him with love since the rest of the family wasn’t there. So Taryn would actually do the mature thing and sign her gifts from her and her twin so he didn’t look like a fool later on. However Taryn had no idea what a big brother would get his younger brother.
That thought process brought Taryn to Hogsmeade and to Zonko’s joke shop. A place that she had always avoided but she had figured that her younger brother would want something from this store. Everything in here their parents wouldn’t approve of so it was exactly what Taryn should be searching for. She walked into the shop with a quick prayer that her ex-boyfriend wasn’t working. That would just be the conversation from hell since they were on okay terms. The man somehow got it into his head that Taryn wanted to marry him, which was the farthest thing from Taryn’s mind. However when she walked in she didn’t see anyone immediately but could hear someone walking through the aisles. “Hello? Alaric?” Taryn called out as she began looking down the aisles browsing the shelves not knowing where to begin.

Having made room for new products within the store, Alaric was pleased to see so many new products on the shelves, waiting for someone to come in and test them out before buying them. A recent agreement between Zonko's Joke Shop and Weasley's Wizard Wheezes was made so that Alaric could start selling the WWW products within his store. That made it easier for students to buy the favoured Weasley products, seeing as Diagon Alley was out of their reach while they were in school. In fact, Zonko's had put all the Weasley products in a section of their own, near the counter to advertise that they were new to the Zonko's store. As soon as students started finding out that they could refill their Weasley product stashes, once they ran out, from Zonko's ... it would definitely keep them happy. That made Alaric happy, seeing as he was glad that there were still troublemakers and prank pullers around the world. Majority of Alaric's customers were children, whether they were youngsters or Hogwarts students. It was a Joke Shop afterall, mostly targeted towards kids seeing as adults usually grew out of the need to cause trouble. Alaric always made sure he could entertain and intrigued his customers, make them interested in prank products.
Missing the sound of the bell indicating that someone had walked in, Alaric fixed up the Sugar Quills stand that had been messed up, the quills looking like a big sugary cloud. It wasn't until he heard a female voice say his name that his head jerked up as he went in the direction that the voice had come from. A female in his shop? Familiar with him. Well, that could be multiple people really. When Alaric saw who it was that was in his shop, he stopped in his tracks and smirked. Taryn Abercrombie. Who would have thought he would ever see her in this shop? Let alone now that he owned it. Though maybe she hadn't become aware that he now owned the place so was hoping he was still an employee and not actually working today. Ric wasn't sure. But she had called his name. He walked up to his ex-girlfriend, the smirk still smug on his face as he stopped before her. "Miss Abercrombie, I must say this is a plesant surprise." he said. Looking Taryn up and down, Ric's smirk softened into one of his famous charming smiles. "Still looking great T," he said, winking at her before looking around. "What can I do for you, love?" Of course with Taryn’s luck Alaric was working today but she wasn’t too upset by that. She had her grieving period after their relationship had ended and had moved past that. Now she would be civil with the man and even friendly because she didn’t have a reason to hate him. Sure he broke her heart but he wasn’t the first guy nor would he be the last. Taryn had gotten along with him and enjoyed his company so she would keep up with their friendship. She had known that he had acquired the joke shop, some friend told her or something and Taryn was happy for Alaric. He was always a jokester and loved the shop so it was only a matter of time before he owned the shop. She always found that it was an odd combination for Alaric to work with dragons half the time while he owned a joke shop. She didn’t see how the two worked together.
When Alaric showed himself Taryn couldn’t help but smile. He looked as handsome as ever and just with a few words she remembered how she managed to fall for him so quickly; he was a charmer. “Always nice to see you too, Alaric.” Taryn said pleasantly as he stopped in front of her. He could hopefully help her figure out what to get her little brother. Out of everyone who worked here he probably understood the most that when it came to gifts for fourteen year old boys, she was not the best gift giver. “Thank you. You are still as charming as ever I see.” Taryn said trying not to blush knowing her fair skin would show even the slightest amount of pink on her cheeks. Her eyes went back to the shelves that seemed to be overflowing with tools to prank people with. Taryn had only entered the shop a handful of times while she was actually at Hogwarts and spent a bit more time here when she was with Alaric. She liked the jokes well enough and laughed when they were pulled correctly but understood that sometimes a prank could go too far. And when that happened it wasn’t polite to laugh. “It’s my little brother’s birthday. He’s fourteen years old and I figured he would enjoy something from here. And I have no idea what to get him so I could use some suggestions.” Taryn said looking over at Alaric as she spoke finding everything on the shelves interesting. She wanted to look at some things a bit more closely but knew that if she touched something the wrong way it could backfire on her.

Taryn Abercrombie and Alaric had history together. There was two years between them so they had known each other throughout their time at Hogwarts. Also the fact that she was attractive so Ric would have definitely worked his charm to seduce her and get her attention. It clearly had worked, cause they had ended up dating at some stage then. It wasn't as bad as Alaric expected, only because he usually never really bothered with relationships. He had had a few, but nothing really went anywhere serious. And then Taryn was looking at wedding magazines and Alaric bolted. It was probably a little much, after all Taryn had only been looking at them ... but that was what had freaked Alaric out. Even just looking would eventually plant the seed in the mind and it was only a matter of time before it bloomed. Alaric was not made for a suit and wedding vows. He was a free spirit, not even capable of settling down. Alaric was surprised that Taryn could even put aside it all and decide to be on speaking terms with him again, but it was all good for him. He would still act his charming self.
With a flashing white teeth grin, Ric winked at her, just as the three year old came waddle running down past them, going head first into Ric's leg. Ric leaned down and grabbed him, keeping him standing before he could fall and knock one of the stands over. "Kai, careful now. We can't have those dungbombs going off. You were enough of one yourself. Off you go, little man." he said as the toddler went trodding off again. Standing up straight again, Ric ran a hand through his hair, looking at Taryn and smiling. "Sorry ..." he simply said. He folded his arms across his chest and listened and nodded. "So a birthday present. Well, you came to the right place. Where do we start? We can go by the small simple tricks, ones that are harmless and don't do damage. More just for the giggles I guess? Or if he's familiar with his muggle studies, there's plenty of muggle pranks, which have been specially magically modified by yours truly," he said, gesturing to himself. "Or we've actually only just started taking in Weasley Wizard Wheeses products, helps all the students who can't get to Diagon Alley now that they're back at school. You can't really go wrong with those. It really depends on how much of a bang you want your brother to create." he said, grinning. Of course, if it was Alaric, he'd want his sibling to get noticed for their prank pulling and trouble making. Taryn never really struck Ric as the big prank puller herself. Sure, she'd enjoy them but Ric could never see her participating or being the reason for one. WORDS; 476 . TAG; TARYN ABERCROMBIE NOTES; ^_^ <3
